Al Gore Is Watching You

Is it any wonder that Bono needs to ‘confess’ to Father Al?

Cool Stuff

A solar-powered media player!

The eMotion EM-SOL1GIG is pretty chunky as media players go: at five inches across, an inch thick, and a hefty 10 ounces, you won’t be putting this sucker in your jeans pocket anytime soon. Open it up, however, and you’ll find a pair of solar panels that’ll charge the player’s lithium-ion battery in about three or four hours (good for 17 hours of music playback). Even better, the player comes with a set of six connectors for charging laptops, cell phones, and other portable devices.

Specs-wise, the EM-SOL1GIG holds its own quite nicely. It can handle MP3, WMA, and WAV audio files, along with AVI and MPEG-4 video; the 3.5-inch, 320-by-240-pixel display was decent enough, if a little short of eye-popping. The player also has a photo viewer and a TXT file reader, along with a game emulator that’ll run NES, GameBoy, and Sega game ROMs. Oh, and if you get lost in the woods, the built-in LED flashlight can help you find your way back to the tent.

It’s cheaper than the Gamerator.  But beer & video games trumps portability, video games, but no beer.

Happy MLK, Jr. Day

Some think we should have it on April 4th, when MLK Jr. was murdered. Some think it should be a day to really stick it to the whites.

I listen or read the famous speech by MLK, Jr., and I have to tell you– some people have it all wrong. The “I Have a Dream” speech is probably one of the best speeches ever written. And what’s sadder is that the people who purport to be those who follow the legacy of King are the ones who are missing the point of this speech and its message. I’ve bolded the sections of his speech that relate to this point.

Here it is in its entirety, with the text of the speech below the fold.

Hunter’s Gone, so Who’s Left?

but not forgotten.  Hopefully Mr. Duncan Hunter will get selected as a VP candidate to get some national exposure before 2012.

Hunter has more results than Rudy, who’s been absolutely pathetic in the polls, considering how much money he’s put out there.  To be frank, Hunter didn’t have the money for political ads, but Rudy’s had 3-4 ads out in states.  And he’s received zero support.  Correction, he’s received negative support, as his poll numbers have been shrinking.

Considering the money he’s spent, his campaign has landed with a giant thud and has done very little moving ever since.  Not as much Cloverfield Monster as Statue of Liberty head.

As for Fred, everyone’s saying he’s not out.  Now that Hunter’s gone, the person with the next best credentials is… Fred.  It’s pretty sad.  Fred’s not an uber-conservative, but he’s got tremendous presence.   I think he’ll be pleasantly surprised if he sticks it through Feb. 4th at the support he’ll get.  And we’ll see just how little support Huckabee has outside of the Bible Belt.

The state to watch is  Texas.  What?  Texas doesn’t decide until March 4th?  Jerks.

But it will be crucial for the GOP nomination.  My guess is we’ll have a 3 way race by then, with Romney, Huckabee, and either McCain or Thompson.  And the big money GOP state of Texas will be a huge indicator of just where the core GOP support is going to go, if it goes anywhere.  Technically, Ron Paul is the “favorite son”, but just what is going to happen in Texas will be inherently interesting.

If any trends are an example, Romney will win on Super Tuesday.  I’m guessing 1) Romney 2) Fred  3)  McCain.  I know it’s an upset call, and maybe a little Pie in the Sky, but I’m sure Fred can place second, even if it’s a weak second.  It all depends on if he gets it going in the next 2 weeks.

Been a Few Days

It’s been a few days since I posted last.  I’ve been working on some new reactions and, in the meantime, have been working on a big personal issue (don’t worry, it’s good news), that I won’t go into just yet.

As it’s the first week of school, I’ll be horridly busy the next 4 days with adds, drops, printing, and organizing (not to mention a few interviews of candidates coming around campus).  My posts will be short– no diatribes.  And for those who’ve sent me mail, I’ll get back to you soon.

Insert Star Trek Joke Here

Scientists think they’ve nailed down where “natural” antimatter occurs in the universe.

It’s a good article.  But someone should really clue that journalist into beta decay.

Why there is no GOP frontrunner.

I posted this over at Michelle Malkin’s blog (it’s over at Hot Air now, too) and deemed it good enough for re-posting. It’s a comment responding to concerns about how Mitt Romney comes off to voters, something written about in the NYT by Dean Barnett.

—————————————————————-

Many people have their theories on why Romney isn’t running away with the campaign. And Barnett’s partially right, but he’s missing the obivous. The Republican field is full of reasonable choices for the nomination (reasonable to a certain set of voters, that is!)Romney’s a good manager & a nice guy, but he was governor of Mass. Any East Coast Republican is immediately going to turn off any social conservative because there are taxes they have to pay to the social liberals in order to get elected.

Rudy’s got a similar problem. We all know he did a great job with 9/11 and cleaning up NYC. In the meantime he dumped his 2nd wife after she stuck through his cancer run. Then he married his nurse! That sound you hear is the puking of several social conservatives, especially after knowing Rudy’s pro-choice stances.

Fred! seems great. Good ol’ Southern Boy. Nice charm, wit, relaxed, and seemingly conservative. But he got in the race way too late (or the race started way too early– you decide) and he’s fighting an uphill battle to capture those who’ve committed to Mitt or Rudy or McCain. He’s gathering steam– but is it enough steam to win on Super Tuesday? That’s the question.

Huckabee is a Christian Minister, which really excites the Americans for Jesus crowd. I’m Catholic and I like Jesus just fine– what I don’t like is Huckabee’s complete capitulation to higher taxes and bigger government in Arkansas. He’s a social conservative but political liberal. (Didn’t the USS Enterprise use those two forces to power the warp drive?) He’s got the Christian vote– well, the ignorant Christian vote, and that’s power from the pulpit.

And don’t forget McCain. He’s great with foreign policy. But as the season rolls on, we are reminded again of the horrible McCain-Fiengold legislation. Don’t forget his formation of his coalition of senators to undermine Republican leadership in the Senate. And don’t forget his tarnished past– AZSCAM, for example. He may be an ex-POW, but he’s spent so long in politics he’s got a closet full of skeletons and a Conservative base that doesn’t trust him.

So we’ve got Rudy, Mitt, Fred, Huck, and McCain– each with a solid core of supporters. (And there’s Ron Paul, too, bringing in the Troofer/Stormfront vote.) The vote is solidly split because each of the candidates has something that attracts a core of voters.

So the idea that “people don’t like Mitt” is tenuous. I’d be more willing to state that people like other people more than Mitt. Or Rudy. Or McCain. Or Huckabee. Or Ron Paul.

(But everyone likes Duncan Hunter– they just don’t think he can win. How can someone everyone likes not win?)

Katie Couric — Unplugged!

It’s a scandal!  It makes Katie look like a tyrant!  She’s the Worst Person in the World!

Look at this video that totally zings Katie!

Or, don’t.  It’s long a quite mundane.  She “swears up a storm” with Bob Schieffer, according to the blog, but it’s more of a playful chat between two colleagues.  In fact, Katie seems professional, nervous, but at the same time, holding a good rapport with her crew.   I think whoever released this wanted to show how well Katie did.  I don’t see where Drudge and Harry Shearer think this is a bad thing (Drudge says she’s WILD).

I was expecting a 5 minute profanity laced tirade by Katie.  But this was beyond tame.

I know some of you don’t like Katie, and I’m not a fan of her politics & views, but come on– this was a news anchor doing well under pressure.  Not worth $20 million, but she’s holding her own and having fun.

Bobby Jindal Sworn In Today

The new governor of Louisiana is in.  He’s pledging to rid Louisiana of the corruption and usher in a new era of ethics.  Hopefully he’ll have more success than Nancy Pelosi in Congress.

I think Jindal would be an ideal running mate for Fred Thompson if he pulls off the upset win, but I hope he declines.  We need new, young, principled blood in key positions around the nation, Democrat & Republican.  Dump the old ways of doing things, and that’s about 75% of Congress.
