The Energy Bully

Russia is threatening to cut off natural gas supply to Belarus and Georgia unless the two states agree to pay higher prices in 2007. This comes as the Eurasian winter begins to settle in, and leaving those two countries without natural gas from Russia will put a dire strain on both countries.

This news comes shortly after Russia confiscated a Shell facility and turned it over to Gazprom.

These are not the actions of a “Free Market” Russia. This sounds like the old USSR– using whatever leverage it took, however cruel, to get people to comply with their demands.

Watch Russia carefully. I don’t like where this is going.
