Russia Cuts Fuel Lines

The biggest underreported story out there has been Russia’s authoritarian clampdown on non-state fuel producers in its nation and how it’s signaling it’s going to use these fuels to influence its neighbors.

Now Russia has cut gas supplies not only to Belarus (in the middle of winter, nonetheless) but also to Germany, Poland and Ukraine. I guess the thinking is the surrounding states will put pressure on Belarus to cave to Russian demands so they can get their gas back up and running.

How very old-style! I think that’s a strategy Kruschev would be proud of!

Put this together with the seizing of fuel sites from private companies and turning them over to the state-run Gazprom, and you’ve got a major shift back towards totalitarianism.

Can some US Politician please address this case of international extortion?
