The Goracle Ties Myanmar Cyclone to AGW

Not a surprise, really.  He’s laying the blame of this horrible tragedy at the feet of industry, carbon dioxide, and the evil Internal Combustion Devil.

It’s an inconvenient truth– Al Gore doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about.

The death toll of the Myanmar Cyclone Nargis is expected to climb to a staggering 100,000 from direct and indirect causes.  It’s an area that was similarly devastated by the New Years Tsunami that killed over 200,000 people.  This cyclone hit with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph, putting it at a category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale of Hurricane intensity.  Coincidentally, that’s the same wind speed that Katrina had when it hit New Orleans.

The reason both of these Hurricanes are such horrible tragedies has less to do with nature and more to do with incompetent governance.  New Orleans was evacuated during Katrina.  The people left behind were not evacuated due to various reasons, and their rescue was not affected due to poor management of emergency resources.  As I mentioned before, Florida was hit with 4 hurricanes in a row the year before Katrina, and they managed to come out OK.  One hurricane hits Louisiana and nobody can land supply helicopters at the Superdome.

Myanmar is far worse.  A secretive military junta (backed by China) that slaughters innocents in secret isn’t going to be willing to chum up to Western governments wanting to supply aid.  So as they drag their feet, thousands more will die of illnesses that could have been prevented with modern medicines blocked by a reactionary government.

The tragedy of both Katrina and the Myanmar Cyclone is that faith in government is wholly misplaced.  Instead of consolidating military power, perhaps the military junta in Myanmar could have evacuated the coastline as the cyclone approached.  But they didn’t, and as a result, hundreds of thousands are dead, dying, injured or homeless.

Don’t blame Global Warming for these deaths, Al.  The blame is on a government your feckless United Nations does nothing to stop.

    Re; Food Crisis
The delta in Burma that was devastated was their major rice growing area. Expect famine too, sadly.

Speaking of famine’s relationship to bad government, I was listening to NPR. A reporter on the phone said people in Somalia were starving because charities could not afford to buy the homeless food. I thought it was because the warlords were stealing all the food, displacing farmers and planting land mines. It’s not the Ak-47, its the CO2.

If the farmers had solar panels, there would be no war, hatred or strife in Somalia. Just lots and lots of love-ins.

I think that AlGore’s statement today will be regarded as his “jump the shark” moment.

From here on in, he will be either ignored or ridiculed.

Two reasons: 1) Most people don’t believe the hype any more; and 2) there are FAR more important things to worry about in the near-term.

Check out the WFP world hunger map. All countries will huge hunger percentages are saddled with corrupt/brutal governments. Climate (except for sub-sahara Africa) has nothing to do with it. Cuba seems to be ok, go figure.
Maybe Al should focus on diplomacy. Nahhh. No chance to pontificate there.
Speaking of the Goracle. I saw the 60 minutes Scalia interview. The Justice reminded me that it was Gore, himself, that brought the Florida vote case to supreme court. Damn. Sore loser. No wonder his home state voted against him.

Wrong again Mikey. Another case of an authoritarian buying BS. Al Gore’s statements were altered and spun by lying right-wing media.

    What he actually said was:

““any individual storm can’t be linked singularly to global warming – we’ve always had hurricanes.””

    He also said:

““the trend toward stronger and more destructive storms appears to be linked to global warming, and specifically to the impact of global warming on higher ocean temperatures in the top couple of hundred feet of the ocean, which drives convection energy and moisture into these storms and makes them more powerful.””

Guess what, Gore was right, sea surface temperatures were over a full degree Celsius above average in the region where the Myanmar cylone intensified before landfall, as can be seen from the May 1 NOAA satellite map.

Both sides of the mouth again, Willy?

Here’s what he said to NPR:

“And as we’re talking today, Terry, the death count in Myanmar from the cyclone that hit there yesterday has been rising from 15,000 to way on up there to much higher numbers now being speculated. And last year a catastrophic storm from last fall hit Bangladesh. The year before, the strongest cyclone in more than 50 years hit China – and we’re seeing consequences that scientists have long predicted might be associated with continued global warming.”

Citizen Sugar is not a “Right Wing” outlet, just to let you know.

His quote about hurricanes that you mention comes after laying this groundwork. It’s like telling the jury to “disregard the comment”– they’ve already heard it and they’re not going to disregard it.

And as for temperatures in that region being high– can you show that’s directly associated with global warming?

    I didn’t think so.

But, you certainly are willing to buy into his use of the Myanmar Cyclone to promote AGW. You’re here talking about sea temperatures and how it spawned a big ol’ cyclone– something that is an enormous tragedy, but not tragic enough to prevent Al and the Gorebots (like yourself) from shamelessly using it to promote (and “not promote) AGW.

If he wasn’t making the connection, Willy, he’d have never said what he said in the first place.
