The Democrat “Strategy”

I think the biggest turn-off for people and politics these days is the mud-slinging.  Nobody wants to vote for someone who’s done nothing but denigrate someone else, or had his/her hatchet-men denigrate them.  I think it’s a big block to people wanting to serve, as well.

The big concern is that someone will turn up something embarrassing, and it will turn into scandal.

Unfortunately, it’s how the Democrats won the Congress in 2006.  They’d like to think it was due to people finally identifying with their ideas, but it was mainly due to an under-performing Republican congress that was entrenched in scandal.  Hurricane Katrina, the Iraq War, ethics violations, arrests, embarrassing actions in airport bathrooms– it was a mess.  And what did the Democrats campaign on?  Ending the war.  At that point, the economy was doing better, so they couldn’t run on that.  Instead, they wanted to end the war.  Truth be told, nobody wanted to vote for an incompetent, corrupt Republican Congress.  So in waltzed the Democrats.

I’ve noticed a trend for many years.  Democrats cannot win on ideas alone.  If you listen to the Democrat idea, it’s tax more, spend more, put in universal health care, end the Iraq war, and confront new & existing threats with aggressive diplomacy.  It’s been the same card for over 20 years.  Carter led the charge, and people copied him.  Clinton attempted Universal Health Care, and it failed.  Locations that rely on Government hand-outs (lower-income urban neighborhoods, universities) tend to support Democrats.  It’s something most people don’t like– getting taxed more to pay for someone else’s expenses.

The ordinary tax-payer knows this.  Any time a Republican says a Democrat will raise your taxes, there’s little doubt that they will.  Democrats can’t offer values and ideas that have broad, resonant appeal, so they recognize that the only way to win is to smear the other person long enough, or dig up something embarrassing, that forces the Republican to withdraw or damages them enough to seal a Democrat victory.

In 2004, when Obama was running for US Senate against Jack Ryan, the Chicago Tribune sued (and won) to have Ryan’s sealed divorce records opened (something both Jack and Jeri Ryan opposed).  Rather than have the contents of his divorce exposed to public light, Jack Ryan decided to drop-out of the race and spare his then 7-year-old son the humiliation of reliving his parent’s divorce.  There was no reason to sue to get the records opened as the records had no bearing on Ryan’s presentation of ideas! The entire purpose was to smear and humiliate, something Democrat-aligned publications will be happy to do for their brothers in ideology.  (Ryan was replaced with Alan Keyes who did the best he could and picked up 25% of the vote.)

Now, the DNC Political Machine has sent people up to Wasilla with the express purpose of digging for dirt on Sarah Palin.  Why?  Because they can’t have an open debate in the realm of ideas.

When I was 18, I left the Democratic party behind for just such behavior in California.  There is no honor in attacking a candidate’s appearance, mocking them through “satirical” art, spreading half-truths and lies, and even scrutinizing the actions of an 8-year old girl (much to their disgust).  There is no shame– these cynics highlight the worst humanity has to offer.  And for people to find this behavior acceptable is beneath contempt.

I’ll never vote Democrat, at least until I see a huge shift in behavior and honorable behavior.

Interestingly, I’ve not read anything on Michelle Obama’s kids.  I remember the outrage (both right and left) when people attacked teenaged Chelsea Clinton.  Nobody would touch Amy Carter.  But now it’s OK to attack the children of the second woman nominated for VP?

Disgusting and dishonorable.

“I’ve noticed a trend for many years. Democrats cannot win on ideas alone.”
But isn’t this sad? Isn’t this a testament to how some people vote? If we want to elevate our politics beyond mudslinging and lies, then we should be doing as the Dems are trying to do and focus on the issues. Sad truth is mudslinging works. In spite of this, Dems do not follow in the Repubs lead and try to stay focused on the issues. It’s a shame they don’t win, since their ideas are pretty good. Since they don’t go dirty, and Repubs do, Repubs win most of the time. What I dont get is your acting like running on ideas is a bad thing…

“Hurricane Katrina, the Iraq War, ethics violations, arrests, embarrassing actions in airport bathrooms– it was a mess. And what did the Democrats campaign on? Ending the war. At that point, the economy was doing better, so they couldn’t run on that.”
Katrina (and the government’s failure in response), the Iraq War (and the government’s failure totally on that), ethics violations, those are ISSUES not scandles. Those are the results of Repubs ideas failing! the bathroom mess is more of a scandle, and it’s interesting because it exposed blatant hypocrasy. I don’t know what you’re talking about “the economy was doing better” unless you mean it went from batshit terrible to just a damn mess. The point is that the failure of Repubs and rise of Dems in comgress was a result of failed ideas getting out, and new ideas getting in.

“If you listen to the Democrat idea, it’s tax more, spend more, put in universal health care, end the Iraq war, and confront new & existing threats with aggressive diplomacy.”
I guess that’s how you hear it if you’re brainwashed y repub talking points. Tax and spend. Tax and spend. Nevermind Obama’s tax policy actually lowers taxes for 90% of America. Nevermind Obama accounts for how most of his new spending will be paid for. Nevermind that most people Nevermind that Bush the 1st said “READ MY LIPS. NO. NEW. TAXES.” then BOOM! taxes. Nope. Some people just repeat the catchphrase they learned over and over again. Tax and spend. BIG gov. Tax and spend. Big gov. Four feet good! Two feet better!

“Now, the DNC Political Machine has sent people up to Wasilla with the express purpose of digging for dirt on Sarah Palin. Why? Because they can’t have an open debate in the realm of ideas.”
I guess the “machine” has to dig up some facts (or dirt as you call it). Why? Not because they can’t have a debate on ideas, because Dems try to do that all the time. It’s because Palin out and out refuses to be interviewed lately. I havn’t read much of your stuff, but I bet all the smears on Obama didn’t bother you much. But heaven forbid anyone do research on Palin! That’s just baldfaced hypocrasy.

“Interestingly, I’ve not read anything on Michelle Obama’s kids. I remember the outrage (both right and left) when people attacked teenaged Chelsea Clinton. Nobody would touch Amy Carter. But now it’s OK to attack the children of the second woman nominated for VP?”
I’ll tell you what: the day M Obama runs for VP, promotes Ab only sex ed legislation, and then her underage unwed teen daughter gets preggo, talk about it all you want. That’s not attacking the kids, as you put it, it’s questioning the mother/governer.

I, too, was a Democrat. I voted for Jimmy Carter in 1976, and twice for Al Gore for the U.S. Senate. My shift to Republican came not because the Republicans used attack politics to ‘capture’ me, but because the Democrats started shifting to the left. I followed Ronald Reagan and his brand of conservatism, to the Republican party.

Gun control was the first issue that started driving me away from the Democrats. As an NRA member, and realizing that the 2nd Amendment is there to check the possibility that our government might go south, the Democrat’s desire to control private ownership of guns is a sign that..they were about to go south. Or left, I should say.

Then, the Democrat’s soft, weak foreign policy. George Bush Sr. had restored some of the luster that was taken off by the Vietnam debacle, then Bill Clinton came along and made a mockery of our armed forces.

The Democrats at some point became the Party of Atheism, with at first whispers, now with loud, soulless attacks on good people’s personal religious beliefs. The abortion debate…where Democrats champion the killing of a conceived, unborn child, who may very well have a soul; and do so not for only legitimate medical reasons (to ‘save the mother from a medical disaster’) but for simple convenience, as an aide to narcissistic sexual mores.

As time passes, the Democrats move farther and farther to the left, leaving me with the same set of core values I’ve had for decades. Decades ago, I was a Democrat. Now, I barely recognize that party.
