In every defeat there is a lesson. THe first lesson is that a biased media can certainly influence an election. The second lesson is that we reap what we sow.
Bush’s missteps in the White House, in particular his abandonment of fiscal conservatism, helped fuel yesterday’s losses. The GOP scandals that hit also damaged the Republican brand. Dole should never have lost, but she did. People were not happy with the economy, and the ruling party, the party of Bush (regardless of whether they caused the problems or not).
Had the 2002-2006 conservatives concentrated on reducing government spending, cutting taxes, and fixing the problems facing social security and the housing market, we wouldn’t be in this situation. But they didn’t, so the problems bubbled up, and now it’s up to the Democrats to address them. How will they address them? With higher taxes & greater regulation.
I personally don’t think Obama is going to do anything to address the national debt, the size of government, or reduce the tax burden. I also don’t think his policies are going to right the economy, and we’ll see two years of recession (which will be blamed on Bush by Obama, Pelois & Reid).
The GOP needs to focus on economic issues the next 4 years if they want to take back the Senate and House. The Democrats are vulnerable, and they don’t think they will be in 2010 and 2012. But the GOP needs to focus on fixing the economy. That’s the only way we’ll win seats in 2010 and 2012.
